• Open to cis- and transgender women and gender non-conforming students in grades 9-12

  • Must be available for premiere June 7, 2020 during Re:Sound.

  • Must reside in Northeast Ohio



  • Two composers will be selected

  • Each selected composer will receive a $150 commission fee

  • Selected composers cover their own travel expenses for rehearsals and performance

  • Timeline:

    • Application due November 1, 2019

    • Composers selected and notified by December 1, 2019

    • Conversation with Torrell Moss and CUSP team begin in mid-December

    • Score and parts of new work due February 1, 2020

    • In-person workshop/rehearsal with Torrell in Cleveland will take place in March or April 2020 (exact date TBD)

    • Revisions of new work due May 1, 2020

    • Final dress rehearsal on Saturday, June 6 or Sunday, June 7, 2020

    • Performance on the afternoon of Sunday, June 7, 2020

 Application Materials:

  • There is no application fee.

  • Required materials should be sent via email to uncommonsoundCLE@gmail.com:

    • Your name, address, phone number, high school, year in school, how long you’ve been composing, and any other comments.

    • A score and/or recording of a solo or chamber piece you have written in the past (alternatively, you can compose a short piece for this application); recording can be midi if live recording has not been made. Please upload the recording to YouTube, SoundCloud, or another platform and provide us with a link -OR- send the file via email, WeTransfer, Dropbox, etc. Hard copy CDs are also accepted.

    • A short essay or description about your experience as a composer and what you hope to gain from this opportunity (can be one page or less).

    • A list of 2 professional references, including email, phone, and relationship (former or current music teachers, ensemble directors, etc.).

Composition Requirements:

  • 5-8 minute percussion solo for any of the following instruments:

    • Keyboard instruments: 5 octave marimba, 3.5 octave xylophone, and a standard-sized glockenspiel

    • Drums: 3 snare drums of various sizes (14”x3”, 13”x4”, and 13”x3”). Other drums may be available upon request.

    • Auxiliary: Tambourine, triangle, castanets, crash cymbals, and claves

  • It’s strongly encouraged that scores and parts be engraved, but this is not required.
